Did you know several states have now made it a requirement to provide a driver license number (or other identification number) before the return can be electronically filed (e-filed)?
In an effort to protect taxpayers from identify theft, more and more states are requesting a driver license number as an additional tool to help confirm the identity of taxpayers.
- The following three states are currently requiring a driver’s license number for electronic filing: Alabama, Ohio, and New York.
- The following seven states are requesting, but not yet requiring, a driver’s license for electronic filing: California, Kansas, Louisiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Keep in mind, that a driver’s license or other state-issued ID is not required in order to file a federal return. If you do not have a driver’s license or other form of state ID and you’re filing in a state that required a driver’s license don’t panic. At least for now there is an option to say that no identification is available.
While some taxpayers might object to this request for even more personal information we are all in favor of taking reasonable steps to lower fraudulently filed tax returns.
