Be safe out there!

Here are some tips on how to protect your personal data:

  • Read privacy policies – Always read the terms of service agreements, including privacy policies. If you see language that implies your data could be shared then opt against using the service.
  • Research company business models – If you’re using a product that doesn’t charge an up-front fee or show any advertising ask yourself why? Chances are your age, gender, shopping activities and location will all be rolled up with other users’ data that is then sold to retailers looking for market research.
  • Audit your apps – The number of connected apps on your online accounts, like Facebook, Twitter, or Google should be audited at least once a year. It’s likely you’ve used these accounts to quickly sign up for other apps (like Groupon, Instagram, Kayak, etc.). The ones you never use may still be taking your personal data. Here is how to disable them:
    • Facebook: Go to settings > Apps tab
    • Google: Go to your Google account page > Connected apps and sites
    • Twitter: Go to the apps page under “Settings and Privacy”
  • Opt out – Don’t just delete your app from your phone or computer. Delete your account altogether.
